Turning Water into Honey

Lauren Bon is the queen bee of a hive that will exist long after she’s gone and her work might just have been one of the keys to saving the planet. Big? Oh, she’s all about big. I mentally call her the Empress of Big Energy and here’s why.I don’t know Lauren, I would say, at all. Not at all. I’ve kind of met her, we’ve not had any deep conversations, but I always feel her presence strongly. I’ve volunteered at her Metabolic Studio near Chinatown a handful of times and even I’m not sure why I’m there but I heard the siren’s call to try to contribute to something unrelated to my actual work as an animal photographer and, quite ...

Moving an Animal Sanctuary Across Country

Turning Water into Honey

What I did in June 2024... I helped drive one of two converted school buses filled with farm sanctuary animals across country from Oregon to Maine. Ta-da. Boom. Drop mic. OK, I was rather proud of myself for hearing the call to adventure, rejecting the call to adventure, accepting the call to adventure. I drove a bus containing 110 birds while a second bus in our little sanctuary caravan had 20 sheep, a llama and an alpaca. The owners of the sanctuary, Morriplum Farm Sanctuary, saw the writing on the wall on their Oregon property. The climate is changing so their property didn't leave the hope that it would be sustainable in the future for their animals, who are part of their ...

Turning Water into Honey

So hard, am I going to ride your coattails, Kirby. Here's the story. The tea. No tea, but I photographed Kirby twice when we were both nobodies. Only one of us still is, that's how good I am. Sent that actor on her way... oh, yes.The first shoot was a headshot shoot when she was a Strasberg acting student in 2011; the second, she lent me a hand for a Hollywood shoot with her dog Apollo.Kirby is all over the place, she's become the star I always knew she would be and she hasn't even hit her top yet. Not close. Keeps leveling up.You know her from so much. "Killing Eve," "The Good Place," "Barry," "Veronica Mars." A lot.She just posted a still from "We Strangers," which is screening ...

Emotion Vs Light: The Cadillac Session

Turning Water into Honey

“I’m Cadillac. I’m 18. I’ve seen some shit.”Do I need to say it? This old dog taught me new tricks. Here we go.I always believed that emotion, first, then light, maybe, triumphed in photography. 1. Emotion. 2. Light, maybe. Badda bing, badda boom.Like when I was first studying photography, the imperfection of Julia Margaret Cameron’s soft focus, highly emotional. evocative portraits just captivated me. Yeah, later influences were Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke White, Cindy Sherman and Annie Leibovitz but my first love was Julia.Oh, I will add, Julia also vexed me so with that soft focus. I struggled trying to love it and I did because of the emotion ...

Karie Bible is Ready for her Close Up

Turning Water into Honey

So one of the things I love about Karie Bible — oh, I just love everything about her — is that her life is so singular, it just makes her fascinating. She is beyond the “Came-to-Hollywood” archetype and she has fashioned a really unique life in Los Angeles. Karie leads tours at Hollywood Forever cemetery and that is where I met her but she has deep knowledge of film history and old Hollywood and that alone just opens one portal of her very interesting life (FACTS: Born on Halloween night and has heterochromia — yeah, two different color eyes -- and if that isn't gothic enough for you, Bible is her true last name. I don't make up the facts, I just report ...
