Lauren Bon is the queen bee of a hive that will exist long after she’s gone and her work might just have been one of the keys to saving the planet. Big? Oh, she’s all about big. I mentally call her the Empress of Big Energy and here’s why.I don’t know Lauren, I would say, at all. Not at all. I’ve kind of met her, we’ve not had any deep conversations, but I always feel her presence strongly. I’ve volunteered at her Metabolic Studio near Chinatown a handful of times and even I’m not sure why I’m there but I heard the siren’s call to try to contribute to something unrelated to my actual work as an animal photographer and, quite ...
What I did in June 2024... I helped drive one of two converted school buses filled with farm sanctuary animals across country from Oregon to Maine. Ta-da. Boom. Drop mic. OK, I was rather proud of myself for hearing the call to adventure, rejecting the call to adventure, accepting the call to adventure. I drove a bus containing 110 birds while a second bus in our little sanctuary caravan had 20 sheep, a llama and an alpaca. The owners of the sanctuary, Morriplum Farm Sanctuary, saw the writing on the wall on their Oregon property. The climate is changing so their property didn't leave the hope that it would be sustainable in the future for their animals, who are part of their ...
“I’m Cadillac. I’m 18. I’ve seen some shit.”Do I need to say it? This old dog taught me new tricks. Here we go.I always believed that emotion, first, then light, maybe, triumphed in photography. 1. Emotion. 2. Light, maybe. Badda bing, badda boom.Like when I was first studying photography, the imperfection of Julia Margaret Cameron’s soft focus, highly emotional. evocative portraits just captivated me. Yeah, later influences were Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke White, Cindy Sherman and Annie Leibovitz but my first love was Julia.Oh, I will add, Julia also vexed me so with that soft focus. I struggled trying to love it and I did because of the emotion ...

Yes, my way of doing business must include printed products for so many reasons. You can’t negate the fact that times have changed and that everyone wants digital files. I recognize that and accept it. That’s why with every piece of printed artwork you purchase, you get the digital file used to create it. And feel free to show off your beloved everywhere, put it on your phone, send it to Grammy or Meemaw, post on social media. So here’s why I don’t deliver digital files exclusively.I believe digitals aren’t safe to retain over the years. I know a whole lot about printing and I use the trusted services of a local Los Angeles printer and a local framer ...

"The Ruff Sessions: Portraits of Beautiful Beasts" was created to bring attention to the plight of larger dogs in the Los Angeles Animal Services shelters who are often passed over for smaller dogs when it comes to adoptions. The reasons are not easy to solve and I don't pretend to have answers. But there are many restrictions on breeds and sizes of dogs that are allowed to live in rented housing by landlords and management companies. Dogs over a certain weight limit are often banned from living in apartments or rented housing. Often, the dogs are returned for "not working out" in the adopters' lifestyles. As one example, the shelters are crammed with beautiful ...
