"The Ruff Sessions: Portraits of Beautiful Beasts" was created to bring attention to the plight of larger dogs in the Los Angeles Animal Services shelters who are often passed over for smaller dogs when it comes to adoptions. The reasons are not easy to solve and I don't pretend to have answers. But there are many restrictions on breeds and sizes of dogs that are allowed to live in rented housing by landlords and management companies. Dogs over a certain weight limit are often banned from living in apartments or rented housing. Often, the dogs are returned for "not working out" in the adopters' lifestyles. As one example, the shelters are crammed with beautiful ...

Excuse me while I pick myself off the floor... okay, ready. We photographed 192 dogs over seven Ice Cream Socials for Dogs in August and September. We did it. Yes, it was the most fun you can have with a frozen treat. And it was also exhausting but oh lordy, I got to laugh and meet great people with great dogs. I mean, come on, dogs eating ice cream? It was the best. You know I photographed these for a book, right? And in the next 15 days I get to sort through all of these images and figure out which ones to submit to the publisher. For reals, this is going to be a tough one. There are certain categories the doggies tend to fall in... the chompers, the delicate lickers, the I-can't-believe-I ...
I'm in Africa right now (I know! Hopefully, I'll have lots of animals to show you when I get back) but I wanted you to see these two cuties, Cooper and Cody, a pair of golden boys if ever there was one. Their human grandmother gifted their fathers with this shoot. Their dads were going to move into this house two weeks from our session and they wanted it to be done there since, obviously, they were just about to move in.The house is spectacular with all kind of woods in the interior. It is just so grand, a really old part of Los Angeles, and just oozes charm. It looks like it could have been the location of any number of movies and it turns out it has been. A celebrity house.Once everyone ...
Pet photography in L.A.!You guys! You almost let me go all of May without a blog post! And surely you are waiting for one! I want to introduce you to Cosita, a much loved 13-year-old Pomeranian. Her owners, Don and Fernando, and I agreed to meet at a Los Angeles park. I'm not going to say which one. But it was one I'd never been to before though it's very iconic. It has views of downtown L.A. Spectacular.Anyway, we started off our shoot with the buildings of downtown in the background. For this shoot, I only brought my Fujifilm X-T2. I left my lights in the car and carried only the camera and a few lenses. The grass was really damp but nonetheless, I laid down so I could get beautiful ...
Ridiculous title, right? You get a little punchy after midnight. So you know California is having this massive super bloom. We had one of the wettest winters on record so that drought? The governor declared it's over. The super bloom was so astounding you can see the flowers from space. I missed it. Yeah, I missed it. The California poppies went crazy while I was in Ireland. And then when I had the slightest moment to drive over to see them, the foliage was turning brown. Just my luck. Not good for a presentation piece. My ace in the hole were the California poppies I have planted on my parkway. A bunch of them. Very pretty. So I asked my neighbor Sherri if she wanted to swing by with her ...
